“It’s None of My Business” by Lisa Bredwell

Ok. I need to tell you something! You probably will need to brace yourself. So…here it goes! Are you sitting down? (Looking serious over top of glasses and clears throat)–”Listen to me and listen good–THERE ARE SOME THINGS IN THIS WORLD THAT ARE JUST NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS.” I know…it’s a hard one to swallow but honey–it’s the truth. I’ll say it again. There are just some things that are none of your business.

A friend and I were discussing over lunch recently, a situation that had came to pass having to do with someone we both knew. My friend made the statement “I can just imagine what people think.” And before I even had a chance to stop and think about it I said “What people think is none of our business” came out of my mouth. Now…I am no profound thinker and although I love Jesus–I’m not a walking angel 24/7, so that had to be a word from the Lord for the both of us that day. And the more I think about it, the more and more I realize that Jesus is trying to teach me something and I need to listen up.

My grandmother (we call her Mamaw Dood) used to say “90% of what we do is driven ‘what people think’. And truthfully it’s not necessarily what they think, but rather what we think people think. Wow–that’s a mouthful.

Cross will be driving and bobbing his head back and forth and I’ll say “stop–people are gonna think you are crazy”. I’ll get a dessert at a restaurant and say to myself “people are gonna think you are a glutton.” and it goes on and on and on and on and on!

But a person’s thoughts are theirs. If they do think I’m a glutton–it’s their thought to have. I am not allowed in that person’s thoughts for a reason. IT’S NONE OF MY BUSINESS. Another person’s thoughts are their own personal property with a keep out sign posted. And you know what I say to that?? I say “Good.”

Let’s look at this from the other side of the coin. What if it’s me??? Let’s say I see the car of someone I know at a known drug dealer’s house.

I may have a thought at the beginning something like “Oh no..they are taking drugs.” , but I work through that thought and bring it into captivity to the obedience of Christ(2 Corinthians 10:5). This is the grace the Lord gives me as He works with me! Another person doesn’t need to know about this wrestling process, just as I don’t need to know about theirs. But then as the Lord deals with my thought process, it may change to something like “I bet they are witnessing to that person.” See how that works??? God has given me grace in my thought process.

Now…if that person is doing something wrong, rest assured Jesus will handle it. Scripture says “For nothing is secret, that shall not be made manifest; neither anything hid, that shall not be known and come to light.” But again…that’s all His business. In the meantime

though, it’s my business to work on me! I need to deal with my own thoughts and actions and I don’t need to place unfounded judgement on a situation I know nothing about.

So…here’s where I am… He’s given me grace and I just want to pass that grace on to others. I intend to give others the grace to have their thoughts about me and work through them just as Jesus does me. I am going to stop confronting people about what I “think” they thought. If I really live a life pleasing to God and try to be a blessing to the others then let them think what they want to about me. If I’m where I need to be with the Lord, that’s all I can do and their thoughts will be wrong anyway. They have to deal with their own thoughts. Again…It’s none of my business…… 🙂

By the way– later, usually I find out that what I thought they thought was not the case at all!
